‘Yappy Hours’ and puppy playgroups around New York City

By Stacey Becker, Contributing Writer

When you’re done with a hard day of work, there’s nothing more fun or relaxing than attending a yappy hour with your pooch.  With your dog, maybe some wine and doggy lovers around you, what could be better? Many doggy daycare places offer free (or virtually free) yappy hours around the city, so here’s a list of a few:

On the Upper East Side, 75th and Paws (234 East 75th St) has a Tuesday night doggy happy hour from 7-8 PM.  There is no charge, but they only allow small dogs.  The owner, Tamara, often holds theme specific events during the holidays.  The website is here: http://75thpaws.vpweb.com/

Doggie-Do & Playtime Too, also Upper East Side, (348 East 76th St) has a Thursday night free yappy hour from 6 -8 PM.   Check back on its website for special events as this place hosts breed specific play dates, fashion shows (for dogs, not humans) and other dog-sanity happenings.  The website is here: http://doggiedonyc.com/about-us/

Biscuits & Bath locations have puppy and small dog playgroups on Thursday nights as well (7 – 8 PM for puppies, 8 – 9 PM for small dogs).  You should call the locations to confirm the playgroup is still happening.  By the way, playgroup = yappy hour in my opinion.  Locations are all over the city (Upper East, Upper West, Midtown, Murray Hill, Greenwich Village and Tribeca, The website is here: www.biscuitsandbath.com

Andrea Arden Dog training offers puppy playgroups, which meet every Tuesday from 6 – 7 PM at the New York Dog Spa Downtown (32 West 25th St) and every Saturday from 1 – 2 PM at the Upper East Side location of Dog Spa Uptown (415 East 91st Street).  These puppy playgroups are for dogs ages 8 weeks – 5.5 months and all mixes, breeds and sizes are permitted.  There is a $10 fee per dog for each visit.

Andrea Arden also offers small dog play groups for dogs under 20 pounds, also $10 per session, per dog for those 5.5 months and older.  These take place at the Chelsea Dog Spa Downtown location from 6 – 7 PM on Monday nights and at Animal Haven Soho (251 Centre St) every Saturday from 1:45 – 2:45 PM. Andrea Arden’s site is here: www.andreaarden.com/dog-training/play-times

Don’t forget about Meetup.com, a great resource for finding out the latest yappy hour events all over New York City.  Sign up here: www.meetup.com/nycyappyhour.  There are constant get-togethers posted for dogs and you can even search to find your specific breed’s gatherings.

Happy yapping!
